Thames Valley District School Board

2016 Annual Report

A Message from the Chair of the Board

Matt Reid

The Annual Report gives us the opportunity to reflect on the past year and celebrate our accomplishments.  Throughout this online report you will learn of many successes in all areas of our organization.

One of our Board’s greatest strengths is its commitment to acceptance and diversity. Bringing together 75,000 students and over 7,000 staff with different religions, ethnicities, creeds, sexual orientation and gender identities is a true reflection of what is great about TVDSB.

It was our school board’s commitment to diversity that showed us at our best, creating the GENTLE program that saw 476 Syrian Newcomers welcomed to our school communities.  It was our school board’s commitment to diversity that after hearing concerns from our trans community that we created all-gender bathrooms in our high schools and at our Board office. And it was this same commitment to diversity that led us to acknowledge the indigenous lands at our Board meetings. It is also due to this commitment to diversity that I proudly write this message as the first openly gay Chair of a school board.  As a former graduate of Thames Valley I can attest that TVDSB proves over and over that every student belongs in our Board and deserves to learn in a safe and secure learning environment.

The accomplishments highlighted in this report would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our many staff, administrators and teachers.  Your ongoing support of our programs and initiatives is integral to our success.  One of Thames Valley’s greatest strengths is our teachers –a commited group of educators who hold high expectations for our students.  Students can graduate from our schools confident that they can compete and succeed in a highly competitive global market.

In closing, I want to thank Ruth Tisdale and Bill McKinnon for their leadership as Chairs in 2015-2016. I look forward to the opportunity to continue building on the great work they have done over the past year in support of our students.

I invite all of you to become more informed about our work by attending our Board meetings.  All meetings are open to the public and the meeting schedule is available at:

Together, let us continue to change hearts and minds and embrace diversity in all its forms.

Matt Reid,

Chair of the Board
